Go Bananas: We're Not All About Local
“Ethical” food is often equated with “local” food. But to be honest, we are not hyper-focused on getting food locally. Yes, local food reduces our carbon footprint, but are you really going to stop eating bananas and oranges? Can you live in a world without tea or coffee? Yeah, neither can we. Let’s be reasonable.
If you’re going to eat bananas, then eat these bananas! Bananas won’t grow in the Fraser Valley anytime soon. But this company in Guatemala is an absolute inspiration for regenerative farming, community support, and socioeconomic improvement.
Yes, these bananas are organic and regeneratively grown. But guess what else. The farmers have taken demolished land and dead dirt and restored it to a thriving, diverse, banana-growing paradise. Then they pay their workers fairly, instal water filtration and wells for their communities, and offer financial assistance for workers to access housing. How amazing can a banana farm be? This amazing.
For us at The Honest Farmer, these bananas tick the box of farming in connection with the land, but also so much more: they’re a part of the solution in restoring a thriving community of farm workers who are paid well in a safe and healthy environment. Are you crying? We’re not crying, sniff.
Oh yeah, the bananas also taste good! Switch to our bananas and you’re supporting community building and land restoration, even in places that aren’t local.
