Can You Taste Social Justice in Your Coffee Cup?
Our coffee is roasted about 1-2 weeks before it lands in your Honest Farmer basket (that’s fresh).
But what excites us most is the farmers.
The beans are sourced from coffee bean farms that go way above and beyond organic. They are from intentionally-built communities that aren’t just producing a product – they’re restoring the land, building education opportunities for locals, and employing people in an ethical, sustainable way.
One of our bean sources is Kingha Coffee, located in the high, volcanic soil of the Kigezi Mountains in Uganda. The earth is perfect for creating complex coffee flavours. The coffee is shade-grown in humane working conditions, without synthetic additives. That makes for safer conditions for farm workers and healthier coffee to drink.
“We’re inspired by how organic and regeneratively grown crops contribute not just to healthier bodies, but to healthier ecosystems,” says Ethan, co-owner of Rested Coffee, who roasts the beans we sell at Honest Farmer. “We partner with coffee farmers who share our values. Farmers who give back to the land, who prioritize soil health and quality over short-term profit.”
Kingha Coffee farms regeneratively, restoring the soil, supporting the community, and following the agroforestry model by partnering with indigenous plants, insects, and soil. “No outside inputs – only what the land gives back,” to quote their website. Plus, Kingha sponsors community-led youth programs and supports student tuition.
“When I first met Kingsley, Kingha’s founder, he welcomed us into his White Rock, BC warehouse with warmth and generosity,” says Ethan. “As we shared stories over his coffee, it was clear that his values mirrored ours at Rested Coffee—slowing down, connecting, and sharing meaningful moments over a great cup of coffee.”
Rested Coffee also partners with South America regenerative coffee farmers.
“We just received a fresh shipment from one of our coffee partners, Café Justicia, a Guatemalan based, non-profit coffee collective,” says Ethan. “The impact of their sustainable growing methods is incredible. The freshness, balance, and depth in the cup speak volumes about the care that goes into their process.”
When it comes to organic and regeneratively grown crops, there truly is a difference you can taste. It could be the complex flavours from healthy, cared-for soil. There’s also something intangible – knowing that you’re supporting an industry that gives back to the community and treats people fairly adds another indescribable flavour of goodness. There’s a value to the coffee that goes beyond a good deal or a great taste.
“We hope you can taste that same difference in the coffee you’re enjoying from The Honest Farmer!” says Ethan, who custom roasts these beans for you from week to week.
